Some companies want staff to take all their allocated holidays – Here’s why

Despite mandated holidays that workers get paid for, the ordeal of asking for a leave prevents them from doing so. However, now some companies are adopting policies that require their workers to take a minimum amount of time off every half year or year.

Employees across the world are stressed, overworked, sometimes even underpaid, and yet they are not taking holidays. And that is not because they do not have mandated leaves, rather an intangible ‘psychological contract’ is holding them back from asking for their dues.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) reported that Indians work on an average for 48 hours every week, ranking fifth among nations that put the longest hours at work. Only workers in Gambia, Mongolia, the Maldives and Qatar exceed the hours Indians work.
