Chess Olympiad: Vocaturo holds Carlsen; Mongolia women stun USA | Chess News

Italian men, seeded 26th, stole the limelight on the third day of the Chess Olympiad on Sunday. They humbled third seeds Norway with 33-year-old Daniele Vocaturo (Elo 2616) holding world champion Magnus Carslen. It was the first-ever game between the players at this level.
Mongolia women stunned No. 7 seeds USA 3-1. The win was also remarkable because they had lost to USA 0.5-3.5 in their last matchup in the Olympiad at Batumi 2018.
Bat-Erdene Mungunzul, the only surviving member of that team, won on the fourth board. Mongolia’s first-board game against the USA women ended in a draw with only kings remaining on the board after 99 moves.
Top seeds USA men came on their own by beating Georgia 3-1 with Levon Aronian and Sam Shankland winning on the second and fourth board respectively.
With Carlsen‘s teammates Jon Ludvig Hammer and Johan-Sebastian Christiansen losing against slightly lower rated players, the world…
