Rutland columnist Allan Grey recalls his unexpected encounters while on holiday

It’s just after 10am and we’re ready, bags packed, and about to transfer to the Vistadome train that will take us back from Aguas Calientes to Cusco, having visited Machu Picchu the previous afternoon, writes Rutland columnist Allan Grey.

A tall gentleman appears and says: “Hello, are you Allan?”

“Yes” I say.

“Allan Grey?”

“Yes,” I reply.

“From Oakham?”

“Yes, but I’m afraid you have the better of me, sir.”

John and his wife Margaret, it turns out, are good friends of a couple we had met in Vietnam and later travelled with several times, Graeme and Pam, and with whom we had shared our South America itinerary.

Graeme and John were both retired detective inspectors from the Lancashire police force, and Graeme had described us and then challenged John to see if he could find us given the coincidence of our respective itineraries.
